About Our Combat Jujutsu Program
Southern Maryland JTR Jujutsu or Jigo Tenshin-Ryu Jujutsu originates from the collection of Japanese Jujutsu “old style” martial techniques; tactically rooted in a combative style. Jigo Tensin-Ryu jujutsu as a “Budo” art form descends directly from the lineage founded by Fujita Chosuke Fumoto Norisada in the first years of the 19th Century by combining elements of the Yoshin Ryu and Kasahara Ryu jujutsu lineages.Training is practiced in a safe manner typical injuries tend to be minor bruising or sprain/ strain to joints. Training involves conditioning exercises, self-defense techniques where students train in pairs. The use powerful strikes are only permitted on the training equipement (pads) and not on classmates.
Instructors ensure the safety of each student by explaining and demonstration all techniques that are taught after that members practice in pairs by performing the methods as told by the teacher. After students have gained confidence with the moves, they will then be allowed to increase the speed and power with another student. Periodic full-power striking drills (kicks & elbows) against punching bags or hand-held pads help students develop strength and accuracy applicable to a real-life self-defense situation. JTR jujutsu is not a program for competition but instead helps students focus on actual self-defense.
This style employs two main types of sparring: “appointment” sparring and “free” sparring. Appointment sparring – is simulation fighting where partners demonstrate various techniques to one another under controlled conditions. Frees sparring is considered full-contact designated for higher-level belts, techniques are dynamic, improvisational, without partner consent. Strikes are reduced from their full power to vital points, but such drills designed to tests skills against non-cooperative resistance. Safety is of great importance in our dojo, this is a combat style designed to inflict injury, but that’s certainly not the goal in practice.
